Campo Saturday
What joy to find this Campo Flicker so close by as I walked the grounds of Recanto Ecológico Rio da Prata, our stopover for midday lunch before an afternoon adventure.
Unconcerned when I walked nearer the tree, I was able to get this lovely close-up.
Campo Flickers are usually found on the ground feeding on ants, so it was unusual to find one perched in a tree. They will also drill into termite mounds to eat the adults and larvae inside.
This is the Campo subspecies with the black throat, and the grizzled look of that throat indicates a female.
Campo Flickers are monogamous, their pair-bond remaining through several breeding seasons.
But there was something else in these trees…
