Fabulous Find Tuesday
Blue-crowned Trogon
As we walked the trail out to the site I’d been waiting for, we found this Blue-crowned Trogon, singing a series of hoot-hoot-hoot-hoot-hoots in the branches. Yowsa!
Here’s a more focused look at those stunning back and tail feathers. On the left, you get just a hint of his rosy-red belly band. I kept hoping he’d turn around, but alas, he did not heed my silent pleas.
They make their nests by tunneling into active arboreal termite mounds. Makes a safe spot for their nestlings, of which they tend to have 2-3, but otherwise little is known about their parenting, because they are hiding in a tunnel!
