Strike a Pose Thursday
The prehistoric-looking Jabiru is a class act. Such a striking bird!
This Crane Hawk also got our attention. I don’t usually think of a raptor on long skinny legs, but those legs have an interesting use.
The hawk uses them to reach into crevices to haul out snakes, nesting birds, bats, and other delicacies. It can cling to the side of a tree like a woodcreeper, then reach into cavities. They also eat rodents, large arthropods, frogs, molluscs, and fruit. [Birds of the World].
This pair of Brazilian Teal glowed in the last rays of the sun, but it was when the male flew that he really showed off…
Missed the focus, but got the colors!

The world is full of amazing creatures, isn't it? That Jabiru is something else! I added to my own life list today, without leaving the house - I happened to glance at the bird feeder from my front window and saw something new! The face eminded me of a warbler or a sparrow but wasn't: it was a Black-headed Grosbeak, possibly a first spring/summer male. So exciting!
